Detecting Impairment Before It Turns Into an Accident

Presentation

Alcohol and drug impairment remain among the most persistent threats to road safety.
Despite decades of regulation and enforcement, today’s prevention methods still rely
largely on roadside testing, ignition interlocks, or post-incident intervention. These tools
miss the most critical window of risk: what happens inside the vehicle, in real time,
while someone is already driving impaired.

This presentation explores a new approach to tackling impaired driving using in-cabin
AI. Instead of relying on steering behavior or external sensors, Smart Eye’s technology
analyzes subtle visual cues such as gaze patterns, blink behavior, and eyelid movement
to detect behavioral signs of intoxication and impairment as they emerge. Trained and
validated on real-world driving data at known blood alcohol concentrations, the system
runs on existing driver monitoring infrastructure, requires no additional hardware, and
processes data locally to meet strict privacy standards.
