Safe Automated Driving: Requirements and Architectures

InCabin

Presentation

Upcoming Automated Driving (AD) systems will enable temporary hands-off and eyes-off operation, demanding fault-tolerant, redundant system architectures that maintain at least degraded functionality for a limited time frame. While OEMs recognize the need for redundancy, implementations often stem from application-specific constraints rather than systematically derived conceptual (or logical) system architecture based on first principles.

‘The Autonomous Safety & Architecture Working Group’ has identified, described, and evaluated conceptual architectures for AD systems. It further outlined considerations for implementing conceptual architectures using physical HW and SW components.
This presentation will cover the group’s first edition report (published in December 2023), discussing why conceptual architectures are helpful and which ones are suitable for AD. It will also present the key extensions forming the second edition report (published in September 2025), including the impact of industry safety standards and how sufficient independence between redundant subsystems can be achieved and evaluated.
