Driver monitoring started with a single question: Is the driver paying attention? Regulation has already raised the bar. At Level 3, UN R157 requires systems to determine whether a driver is available to safely retake control, not just awake. At Level 4, with the driver’s seat potentially empty, the same hardware must shift from monitoring a person to understanding an entire cabin. This roundtable explores whether a single camera-and-radar platform can be re-tasked across the full autonomy ladder, and what that means for OEMs weighing the cost, complexity, and commercial opportunity of building once versus building per level.
