The automotive industry faces the challenge of ensuring vehicle safety through camera-based interior monitoring. As the first OEM, the Volkswagen Group is introducing the fully integrated solution in the interior mirror into volume production and reports on the long-term strategic advantages of this solution and the associated challenges of this single-camera solution. We highlight the topics that interior monitoring will address in the coming years. In the tension between customer acceptance (e.g., visibility of the camera), vehicle integration, complexity, performance, and other customer benefits, we report on the challenges but also on the advantages of implementation of interior monitoring systems as an one box solution in the interior mirror.
By doing this, we provide insights into the technical implementation (software and hardware) and the use cases within vehicle safety (e.g., driver monitoring) and outside vehicle safety (e.g., business functions). Furthermore, we give an outlook on future areas of interior recognition, such as consumer protection requirements or additional comfort features for the vehicle interior, which will positively change usage behavior and the customer experience in the vehicle.
