Gabriel Hine

Gabriel E. Hine, Ph.D., is the Iris Authentication Technical Owner at Smart Eye, where he leads the effort to bring iris recognition into the vehicle cabin. His work spans algorithm R&D through to production-ready architecture, bridging cutting-edge research with real-world automotive deployment. Gabriel has been working on iris recognition since 2020, initially focusing on smartphone applications at Fingerprint Cards (FPC). He holds a Ph.D. with a dissertation on anonymous biometrics, a work that received the prestigious European Association for Biometrics (EAB) Best Biometric Research Award in 2020. In addition to his academic achievements, Gabriel has filed four patents on optics-based liveness detection, reflecting his ongoing commitment to innovation in secure, privacy-preserving biometric technologies for both consumer and automotive applications.
