In the embryonic but fast-moving landscape of in-cabin technology, Tobii’s recent acquisition of Autosense, part of Xperi, marks a significant milestone, cementing a partnership that has formed and grown after being great collaborators with InCabin since 2022. As a close follower of both the DTS Xperi and Tobii journeys, I am thrilled to celebrate this union and explain why I think it’s important.
Tobii, with its roots deeply embedded in the medical industry, gives them experience in robustness and ruggedness as a company, highly valued among OEMs in the in-cabin industry. One of the OEMs and T1s main concerns working in this industry brimming with companies from outside of automotive is whether they can stand up to the rigor demanded of automotive suppliers. Tobii’s medical integrity is a huge benefit. Â
With respect to InCabin as a Community, Tobii has been involved since the beginning, serving on the Advisory Board, giving presentations, showing their first public demos, and participating as a Signature Sponsor. They’ve presented on topics around DMS like low-cost cameras, data privacy and transparency, and cognitive state monitoring for health/impairment.Â
DTS Xperi is very well connected to the consumer, well established in the entertainment industry, their foundation made them the leaders in how to consider the future, customizable user experience in the vehicle. Beyond their expertise in the consumer’s experience in their 3rd space, they carried that careful thoughtfulness through to InCabin as a very engaged Founding Partner. DTS Xperi were pioneers of fostering a sense of community among competitors at InCabin, leading with friendliness and openness to deliver the best event possible. From hosting a Round Table with a Hollywood producer to get people in the mindset of our future cars, to the super cool photographs on metal, hosting the most incredible parties, and even creating a mini movie for Brussels ‘23 to inspire engineers. As a Founding Partner, DTS Xperi have consistently worked to do the right thing for the industry as a whole. Â
Both Tobii and DTS Xperi have been instrumental in bringing real-world car demos to InCabin, showing their prioritization of the real-world physical experience as a means to connect with their audience. Tobii brings an impressive medical robustness, years of success and established leadership in eye tracking, DTSÂ Xperi brings the dreamers who are inventing the ways we will feel in our cars. Both have been critical players since the first InCabin, being involved in every aspect. Their united cause for the industry, their sense of community and friendliness, and their complimentary talents on the safety and convenience sides of the industry make this seem like an excellent combination to me.Â
Throughout 9 years of AutoSens, we have worked with and seen many companies evolve from start up to acquisition, and the sector change shape as mergers and acquisitions take place. And so it is with InCabin, this is not the first, but it could be the most significant acquisition to date in this exciting sector, and we are proud that our InCabin community and event have played a role in making it happen.Â
