In this blog written by Robert Stead, Managing Director of Sense Media Group, he gives you insights into his experience of being the first Chair of P2020, what this unique opportunity entails, and how you can establish your profile at the heart of progressing safety in ADAS.
The IEEE Standards Association reached a significant milestone after 8 years of cross-industry collaboration, the first edition of the standard will be formally published in 2025, and is already being used by many in the industry when testing and calibrating cameras for automotive use cases. This success is due in large part to Margeret Belska, who has Chaired this working group for the last 5 years, drawing on her previous experience with IEEE P1858 Camera Phone Image Quality (CPIQ) Workgroup to help take P2020 through to publication. Margaret will now step back from the Chair role in P2020, and the working group is actively seeking a new Chair to take the reins.
I was the first Chair of P2020, and it’s an exciting and challenging experience. We are lucky that the P2020 working group genuinely has the world’s leading image quality experts on board, which means strong opinions, and discussions at the leading edge of this scientific discipline. That makes for engaging debate, but also means the working group is very well-equipped to take on the task at hand, and steering this pool of great minds is both a privilege and an honour.
The ideal candidate for this role would be someone who is not a technical expert. You are working in, and interested in automotive image quality. You are organized, and deadline-driven. You enjoy delegating tasks and motivating team members to be enthused and engaged, and you’re comfortable running meetings.
Taking on the Chair role is a great way to add to your resume, the IEEE Standards Association is held in high esteem, and I can tell you from personal experience that having this attribute can help open doors, and gives instant credibility, especially if you are earlier in your professional career, as I was.
P2020 is also a very friendly and welcoming group, with members from major global corporations, small businesses, academics, consultants and more, representing the full supply chain from OEM and Tier 1 to image sensor manufacturers, so it’s a great way to expand your network and make meaningful connections with world-class technical experts.
