Why Context Matters More Than Detection in Driver Monitoring

Most driver monitoring systems are built on rule-based logic and fixed thresholds. 

These approaches are straightforward to implement and validate, but they struggle to capture the variability of real-world driving. The same behaviour can represent very different levels of risk depending on vehicle dynamics, road environment, and task load. 

As a result, systems that perform well in controlled scenarios can become either overly sensitive or ineffective in practice. 

Addressing this requires a shift toward context-aware risk modelling, where driver state is interpreted alongside real-time vehicle and scenario data to enable more adaptive and proportional responses. 

While the limitations of rule-based systems are widely understood, the shift toward context-aware driver monitoring is still being defined in practice. 

The following perspective explores how this can be implemented at a system level, combining driver behaviour with real-time vehicle dynamics to assess risk more effectively.

I’m a 16-year-old founder building the future of driver monitoring. I started working on this technology after losing a close friend to a distracted driving crash. That experience made one thing clear: the problem is not that we cannot detect distraction. It is that most systems detect it so poorly that drivers stop listening. After exhibiting at CES 2026 in January and conducting over 1,000 customer discovery interviews, I am now building a system that fundamentally changes how we determine whether a driver is distracted. 
 
Traditional driver monitoring systems rely on static, rule-based thresholds. Eyes off the road for two seconds? Alert. Phone in hand? Alert. These fixed triggers work in a demo, but on real roads they generate so many false positives that drivers tune them out or disable them entirely. That is the core failure. Every moment behind the wheel is treated identically regardless of what is actually happening.

The shift the industry needs is from simple detection to contextual risk assessment. At Attentia, we are building an adaptive monitoring framework that fuses in-cabin vision with vehicle motion signals to dynamically calibrate risk in real time. Our system runs a MobileNetV3-Lite backbone with INT8-quantized inference entirely on-device to track head pose, gaze direction, eyelid state, and device interaction. We then pair that with IMU-derived driving context, including steering oscillation, yaw rate variance, and longitudinal acceleration, to classify the current driving scenario. Highway cruising, urban intersections, stop-and-go traffic, and low-speed maneuvering all carry fundamentally different risk profiles and deserve different alert strategies.

The system also builds individualized behavioral baselines over time. Rather than comparing every driver to a generic threshold, we maintain rolling profiles of head movement stability, gaze dwell distributions, and interaction frequency for each person. A brief glance at a phone during stable highway driving might generate an advisory. That same glance while approaching an intersection with active steering triggers an immediate alert. Risk becomes a composite of what is happening now, what the road demands, and what is normal for this specific driver. 
 
This is where the balance between safety, comfort, and experience lives. Too aggressive and people reject the system. Too passive and it fails when it matters. Context-adaptive logic is the answer. The system stays lenient when it can and firm when the situation demands it. That is how you build a DMS people actually keep turned on.

All processing runs on-device with zero cloud dependency, sub-second response times, and complete data privacy. We built this for aftermarket first, our device clips onto any rearview mirror in ten seconds, but the architecture aligns directly with OEM integration through CAN-bus telemetry like steering angle, wheel speed, and turn signal state. 
 
Adoption is the bottleneck. The systems that win will not just be accurate. They will be the ones drivers trust enough to leave running. That requires treating drivers as individuals, not binary thresholds. That is the problem I am solving.

This shifts DMS from a detection problem to a decision-making layer within the vehicle architecture, where accuracy, timing, and consistency directly impact both safety performance and driver acceptance. 

As systems evolve, success will depend on delivering context-aware responses that scale across scenarios without introducing unnecessary intervention or driver fatigue.
